In this case 18k core memory. That was all that was typically available on mainframe computers in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The input was by punched cards and the output was by line printer. 34. Information: More anniversaries. An e-mail from the Institution of Mechanical Engineers reminded me that it is 150 years since the launch of the Cutty Sark at Dumbarton on 22nd November 1869. It is also the anniversary, in 1769 (the same year as Watt's separate condenser patent), of Cugnot's first small version of his 3-wheeled steam wagon. The following year he built his full sized version which apparently still exists in Musée des arts et métiers, Paris. Added November 2019.

  40. Information: This seems to be a year of anniversaries; it is 200 years since the death of James Watt, in 1819, and 250 years since his patent on the separate condenser in 1769. By a strange coincidence David Napier the marine engineer, who made important developments to the marine steam engine and steamboat services, died in 1869 the same year the Suez Canal opened – a hundred years after Watt’s patent.
